About 3L Therapy Solutions

About the process…

It’s hard. I get it.

It can be difficult to work on things that you consider areas of weakness. This is true for adults – and especially true for children.

Sometimes, that resistance can look like behavior problems and acting out, inattention to the task at hand, even flat-out refusal to try, or any other evasive actions.

But there’s help. There’s hope.

That’s why I take a holistic approach to provide speech-language therapy and academic services. The therapeutic process with me is an equal partnership between me, you, and your child.

We all work together to figure out the best way to move your child forward toward his or her full potential.

We’ll build a relationship.

Mutual respect and trust are the cornerstones of the therapeutic relationship. When I begin working with children, I focus on building a connection and finding out what motivates them.

They need to know I’m their ally, cheerleader, and advocate. As we work together, I encourage them so that they know that they’re capable of making progress and conquering difficult tasks.

It won’t be boring.

Therapy sessions with me always include elements of fun!  Early on, I try to figure out what is motivating for the student. I keep it engaging to encourage them to keep pushing forward.  I make activities fun and relevant to address their goals with conversation topics centered around their interests.

We’ll recognize and encourage progress.

We build in opportunities for success in each session so that they can recognize when they’re doing well – and so they know they’re able to learn and improve and succeed.

This is important because, so often, they’re not feeling that on a day-to-day basis at school.

I’ll partner with you, too.

In addition to working directly with the student, I also regularly check in with the parents. And this is more than just “Here’s what we did today – see you next week.”

Our conversations will be deeper, more interactive:
“Tell me what you see through the week….”
“Tell me about how you were able to address the goals we discussed last time. Did you feel comfortable with it? What worked well? What didn’t work?” “Let’s think of some ideas for how you can continue working on it this week.”

As the parent, you’re perfectly positioned to support your child’s language development and academic growth. It is my job to guide and support you on that journey.

I like to make sure you know how to look for and see your child’s progress because sometimes we are so focused on the “destination” we don’t notice how far we have come.

About Me

I’m Dr. Keena Seward, and I’m excited to connect with you!

Finding direction—

When I started college, I didn’t know what I wanted to study. I was interested in everything! I knew I wanted a career that would allow me to help people, and I had interests in education and healthcare.

I found my way into an “Intro to Communicative Sciences and Disorders” course, and I was hooked! I loved everything about the field, and the rest is history.

I earned a B.A. from Hampton University, a Doctorate in Clinical Audiology (Au.D.) from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from CUNY Lehman College.

I’m also certified in audiology and speech-language pathology by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA). And I’ve pursued specialized training in parent coaching, reading intervention, and auditory-verbal therapy for children with hearing loss.

What I love most –

After working with many populations in various settings, including schools, universities, clinics, and hospitals, I have found that I’m most fulfilled when I’m supporting children and families.

And I’d love the opportunity to support your child on his or her journey to greatness!

A few fun facts about me…

I played the violin from elementary school through college and was on the flag line in the marching band at Hampton University.

I was on the “It’s Academic” quiz bowl team in high school and competed on television.

I enjoy traveling and have a goal of visiting every state and territory in the U.S.

I’m a Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and enjoy mentoring students and new professionals in my field.

I was featured on a news segment in Washington, DC.
